Back in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its worst and millions of Americans were struggling to keep up with their bills, it was announced that next stimulus check 2023 would be sent out to help. These payments, known as economic impact payments or recovery rebate debits, were a welcome relief for many households that were already struggling with financial challenges as the pandemic hit. Since then, the federal stimulus payments have faded into the background as state-issued payments and other forms of aid have taken their place.
Are Americans getting another stimulus check in 2023?
Several VERIFY readers have reached out to us asking whether or not they will receive a fourth round of federal recovery rebates, formally called economic impact payments. The truth is that the federal government is not distributing a fourth round of these payments because Congress would have to pass a new law allowing it to do so.
However, many states are digging into the wad of money that the federal government gave them and they’re sending out their own relief checks to qualifying residents. The requirements for these fourth stimulus checks vary from state to state, but they generally include falling into a certain income level and/or facing some type of hardship.
Some states, including Montana and New Mexico, are still dispatching these payments to their residents because they have budget surpluses from taking in billions in pandemic relief funds. Others are using their surpluses to send out an additional round of inflation-adjusted stimulus checks in addition to the first three that were distributed between 2020 and 2021.
